Hello from the keeper of
My name is Paula; I was born in north east Poland. When I was 11 my family and I moved to New York. Looking back, an 11-year-old comfortable traveling across the world was a sign of things to come.
When I was a kid my parents and I would take trips during summer breaks. The most memorable of those was a road trip to Barcelona, Spain. On our way back I got to see Andorra, Andorra. It’s a tiny country in between Spain and France. I loved that Andorra was small and that it wasn’t the most popular destination. I loved that only a few people would be able to say they went there - compared to more popular places like Barcelona - and that I was one of them. I fell in love with the idea of such an unknown area; I reminisced about it for years! Oh, little did I know about the places I’d see.
I collect stories
People have all sort of hobbies; people collect all sorts of things. I collect stories. The stories vary – like driving through dirt roads in middle-of-nowhere Cambodia to eating a spider to jumping off a building in Bolivia. When I was a younger I imagined I would live life so that when I’m even older I could share stories and experiences. I wanted to have memories to reminisce upon. I created Black Journal to fill this online space with my stories, naturally. I plan on writing all about my past travel experiences and new ones as they come about.
I’ve been to 6 continents, at least 16 islands, maybe like 40 countries by now, and 2 territories, if my memory serves me right. My favourite place is Luxembourg, Luxemburg - that was not an easy choice! I love eating street food. My hope is to spend a month at a Muay Thai training camp in Thailand one of these days. Actually, I have a pretty extensive bucket list. Here are a few other things I’d love to do:
- Study art at an Italian university
- Learn Spanish while living in Argentina
- Sleep under the sky on a beach
- Camel trek in Africa
- See the midnight sun in Antarctica
- Learn to skateboard
- Moonlight at a beach bar
- Paraglide in Liechtenstein
- Volunteer at an elephant farm
- Sit on top of the world after hiking Mount Kilimanjaro
- Attend Tihar festival in Nepal
- Boat ride through the Amazon
- See bioluminescent waters
- Road trip though Italy
- Learn enough to practice Buddhism
- Visit Tasmania
Follow along as I adventure
Like I said, I created this website to keep track of my adventures. I’ve created it to inspire others to go out and do something, anything! It’s not an easy choice to travel albeit it for a weekend getaway or a few months at a time. I get it, I’m lazy and self-motivating is hard. For what it’s worth, everything else is easy once you get your self-determination in order. Let me inspire you to put one foot in front of the other and go seize the world by sharing my own experiences.
I am a solo female traveler. So, most of my content focuses towards that audience. I also enjoy places that are off the beaten path, preferably from a local perspective. I don’t mind big cities, I just don’t care for the every tourist attraction there is. That’s why I prefer to travel slowly as it lets me get to know the location, its culture, and its people better. (Plus, it’s cheaper that way too 😉)
What am I doing with myself?
I am a freelancing web designer and freelancing writer and amateur photographer.
Currently, I am spending time exploring the world while volunteering at hostels or smaller organizations who need help with content, web design and web development in exchange for free accommodations. I also freelance with clients who need those services too in exchange for money. If you’d like to work with me check out how to get in touch with me through my portfolio.
